In the jazz musician’s journey, student and professional, there is really nothing comparable to playing music with other people. As an opportunity that was once afforded to her as she was a developing jazz musician (in places like the former Coffee Pavilion and Happy Endings Cafe), but unfortunately no longer running, Melissa Gardiner has started up a weekly jazz jam session once again in downtown Syracuse. Running every week since May, they have been extremely successful, with an incredible house rhythm section comprised of Syracuse’s finest professional jazz musicians, and at times with surprise guests like saxophonist Myron Walden! The sessions are free and open to all ages, and have shaped themselves to be a great way to spend time with friends and family on Sunday afternoons.

The jazz jams have set up a platform where students can really develop their skills, and allow them an opportunity to perform alongside teachers, mentors, and role models. It is equally exciting for professionals to share the stage with the next generation of musicians. There are some incredible music programs in Central NY schools, and an experience like this can enhance those programs by allowing students to apply their knowledge and take it to the next level, alongside powerful mentors who “came up” in the same fashion, who we are lucky to have in CNY and do not even realize it at times.
